Impressive Gannets

Posted by venturejet

Think you’ve had a busy week and need a day off? Check out what our Grassholm gannets have been doing recently! A team from Plymouth University has been studying the movements of ‘non-breeding sub-adult’ gannets for some years now. We took them out to Grassholm earlier this month and they successfully put trackers on 12 birds. Amazingly the trackers are still providing data. To see what the gannets have been doing please check out the project map.

Gannets are impressive birds. We had the good luck to be in the right place at the right time in Ramsey Sound last week and a gannet came screeching towards the water just a few feet from us. The water was so clear that we could actually see it moving through the water as it surfaced with a very respectably sized mackerel in its beak.

The water continues to be very clear. This is a mixed blessing - it’s chilly for those who want to swim but it’s fantastic for watching the wildlife. My answer? Drysuit!
